About The Soft Skills Society
The Soft Skills Society is an educational and community platform built around a simple belief: life skills shouldn't be left to chance. Ella Donlan has spent years studying the patterns that influence how people think, communicate, work, cope, and connect. But some of her most important lessons didn't come from a classroom. Through mentoring young adults, Ella began noticing the same problems again and again.
Intelligent and capable young people were entering the world without many of the practical skills everyone simply assumed they knew. How do you manage money? Open a bank account? Create routines? Set boundaries? Handle conflict? Ask for help? Communicate professionally? Take care of yourself? Recover when you make a mistake?
And it isn't only young adults. People of every age can find themselves thinking: "Was I supposed to know how to do this?" or "How did this get so hard?"
That question became an important part of the mission behind the Soft Skills Society.
And then came the monsters...Of course, knowing what to do doesn't necessarily mean we actually do it. That realization led Ella to create the Self-Sabotage Monsters—a cast of original characters that give recognizable personalities to the patterns that can quietly interfere with our lives.
The overthinker.
The perfectionist.
The comfort seeker.
The information collector.
The overachiever.
The defender.
The dreamer who starts everything and finishes...well, we'll get back to that.
The Monsters make complicated psychological concepts easier to recognize without turning self-awareness into another reason to criticize ourselves. Because behind many behaviors we call "self-sabotage" is something more complicated: a strategy that once helped us cope but may no longer be helping us grow. Through the Monsters, their Shadows, associated Crystals, practical exercises, and real-world soft skills, the Soft Skills Society helps people move from: recognizing the pattern → understanding it → practicing a different response.
The crystal isn't the change. The Monster isn't the problem. The skill is the work.
Today, the Soft Skills Society is growing beyond self-awareness into something it believes is equally important: practical life education. Its developing Life Skills and Soft Skills Library tackles subjects people are often expected to understand without ever having been properly taught—from personal wellness and relationships to financial literacy, career skills, communication, and everyday independence. The philosophy is deliberately simple: No shame. No assumption that you should already know. Start where you are and learn the skill. Perhaps a refresher? Whether someone is 17, 37, or 67, there is no expiration date on learning something nobody taught you the first time around.

Ella Donlan, Founder

About Ella Donlan.
My name is Ella Donlan and my path to creating the Soft Skills Society hasn't been a straight one. I am a U.S. Navy veteran, trained court reporter, longtime office administrator, Certified Hypnotherapist, and eventual Accounting Manager. I am a survivor of Military Sexual Trauma and suffer from PTSD as a result. I hold a master's degree in Psychology and Hypnotherapy and have a Certificate of Specialization in Finance and Accounting from Harvard Business School Online. I am passionate about my furbabies (4 cats and 2 dogs). I adore my husband. I have six grandchildren, two daughters and a (step)son. I learn more from them than any college. Watching my children grow and now watching another generation grow has challenged my thinking in ways no classroom ever could. Their questions, perspectives, values, and sometimes very different moral compass have caused me to examine my own beliefs, change my mind, and recognize that wisdom doesn't automatically travel from older generations to younger ones.
Somes it travels the other direction. That intergenerational exchange is at the heart of the Soft Skills Society: we all have something to teach, and and we all still have something to learn. Age doesn't automatically make someone the teacher.
In short, wisdom isn't generational.
I have spent a lot of time mentoring young adults and a considerable amount of time learning some of these lessons the hard way for myself. That combination ultimately became the foundation for the Soft Skills Society: psychology made understandable, life skills made practical, and personal development allowed to have a sense of humor. I am not interested in creating another place that tells people everything they're doing wrong. I want to ask, What weren't you taught—and what would happen if someone finally taught you? Because becoming better at life isn't about having all the answers. Sometimes it starts with discovering that the thing you've struggled with for years...is actually a skill you can learn.
